VISUAL STORYTELLER
As a Director of Photography/ Documentary camera operator with 25-plus years of experience, I have worked with many of the major broadcasters in Canada, the US and Europe. Traveling extensively throughout my career, I continue to be inspired by my clients and their projects, the people I work with, the discovery of new places, people and their stories.
Since I was a 12-year-old shooting with a Super 8 film camera, making pictures has been at the center of who I am. I am passionate about visual storytelling for all genres of production; documentary, corporate, reality-TV, web-based, as well as educational content. Whether your project involves a CEO, an artist, a politician, a scientist, fisher, or a person struggling with poverty, you can rest assured I will tell their story with sensitivity, professionalism and attention to detail. My goal is to always exceed your expectations.
About Me
Since 1983, I have worked in broadcast and corporate television. I began my career as a camera operator/editor for CTV’s (one of Canada’s major national networks) regional affiliate, ATV, serving Canada’s maritime provinces. Within two years, I relocated to Toronto to join Radio Canada (French language National broadcaster) as a news/current affairs camera operator.
In 1987, I moved to Ottawa to join CBC’s flagship current affairs program, The Journal with Barbara Frum. There, I covered stories as varied as The Meech-Lake accord, the Oka Crisis, the US – Canada Free Trade Agreement, the Montreal Poly-technique Massacre as well as Perestroika in the former Soviet Union.
After leaving the CBC in 1992, I launched Carey Productions and have since shot for national and international broadcasters, top-tier production houses and independent producers, as well as major corporations. With years of experience in documentary and reality-tv as well as corporate productions, I have the range, depth and feel you want. My clients tell me they appreciate my professionalism, work ethic, my ability to bring out the best in difficult situations, my people skills, sound judgment, creativity, and of course my pictures. I have also been told they appreciate my sensitivity when covering difficult issues and stories. I have also directed and produced educational content and arts programming.
I am based in the Gatineau Hills, across the river from Canada’s capital, Ottawa, which is driving distance to Montreal and Toronto or just a flight away from your location.
